What goes good with cabbage?


Cabbage is an extremely versatile and a low cost nutritious vegetable. Many people don’t like cabbage due to its strong smell and bitter taste, despite of its nutritional facts and health benefits. Adding cabbage to your diet makes you healthy. You can enjoy it raw, steamed, stuffed, stir-fried, baked, sautéed and pickled. Cabbage goes well with almost all the vegetables and herbs & spices so you can use it in any dish, from casserole and side salads to soups and stews. More than 400 types or varieties of cabbage are available in the market all over the world. However, in American markets only three main types of cabbage: red, green and savoy are found. Texture, taste and nutritional profile of cabbage vary from type to type. Red, green and savoy cabbage are eaten after cooking or raw. Green and savoy cabbage go good with dried vegetables, white & minced meat, onions, oily fish, soft cheeses, soups, stews and stuffed. Red cabbage is used in salads or casserole. It blends well with bacon, cured meat, apples, paprika, carrots, bananas, chestnuts, tuna and red.

Veggies: broccoli, corn, carrots, potatoes, peas, leeks & onions; Proteins: beans, lentils, barley & rice; meats: sausage, ham, lamb, pork chops and corned beef; herbs and spices: pepper, celery seed, cumin, tarragon, caraway, dill, garlic, fennel, mustard, savory, thyme, etc.; fried or grilled chicken; apples; and juniper: the little purple-black balls go well with all types of cabbage. You can add crushed juniper in cabbage soup or to the butter used for tossing the cabbage. Vegetarian can use TVP – Textured Vegetable Protein in place of meat.

Unique and Easy Cabbage Recipes

Recipe 1


  • 1 to 2 Tbsp virgin, unrefined coconut oil/olive oil or raw butter
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 pinches crushed red pepper flakes
  • ½ large green or red cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • Sea salt
  • Black pepper

Method of Preparation:

Heat oil in a wide pan over medium heat and add diced onions & red pepper flakes. Sauté them for around 4 minutes or till they become soft. Then, add sliced cabbage & oregano and cook for 2 to 4 minutes, covering the pan. Once the cabbage becomes tender, season it with freshly black pepper and sea salt.

Recipe 2


  • 1 large cabbage, coarsely sliced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 package Yves Veggie Ground Round
  • 2 Tbsp oil
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  • 1 can tomato soup, condensed

Method of Preparation:

First of all, preheat the oven at 350 degrees. In a pan, heat oil and add ground round, salt and pepper. Now, take a 2 quart baking dish and place half of the cabbage. Cover the cabbage with onion mixture and put the remaining cabbage. Pour tomato soup over the cabbage and cover with foil. Bake it for 1 hour and serve.

Tip: You can even use one cup of rice, one cup of water and another ½ can soup in between cabbage layers.

Recipe 3


  • Boiled or steamed cabbage
  • Mashed potato
  • Pepper
  • Salt
  • Grated nutmeg, a pinch
  • Little fried bacon (optional)

Method of Preparation:

Take equal amount of cabbage and mashed potato, add nutmeg & fried bacon. Sprinkle little flour on your hands and make patties. Shallow fry the patties with a little butter and oil till they become golden brown.

Recipe 4


  • ¼ cup of beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp of minced garlic
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 1/2 tsp of minced fresh gingerroot
  • 8 scallions, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp of crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 pound of pork tenderloin, strips
  • 4 cups of shredded cabbage

Method of Preparation:

In a big nonstick pan, heat the broth and add ginger, garlic and scallions. Cook them for around 1 minute. Then, insert pork and cook till the pink color is almost gone. Add cabbage and cover the pan with the lid. Continue cooking for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring once. Finally, season it with salt and red pepper flakes.

Recipe 5


  • 1 Onion, chopped
  • 1 Cabbage, shredded
  • Some Fennel or dill seeds
  • Browned crisp bread cubes

Method of Preparation:

In a pan, heat butter and add chopped onion, cabbage and fennel or dill seeds. Cook them till the cabbage becomes tender. Serve hot after topping it browned crisp bread cubes.
